Whether you need to preserve food or drink, your cooler is an important camping item! So here are a few suggestions for you to make the most of your cooler's benefits.
Food preservation is all a matter of keeping it cool at all times. The French General Directorate for Competition Policy, Consumer Affairs and Fraud Control (DGCCRF) states that simply chilling food can slow or even halt the proliferation of micro-organisms*. If you interrupt the cold chain, product hygiene, nutrition and taste can no longer be guaranteed.
This is why it is important to keep food constantly cool from the time of purchase to when you consume it.
Here's a 5-point plan to get the most out of your cooler and enjoy fresh produce whatever the weather!
1 - Add ice packs to boost the cooler effect. Packs are more effective and hygienic than ice cubes, creating layers between the various items in the cooler and making sure it is evenly chilled throughout.
Plus which, ice cubes can melt, and can damage your food and actual cooler as they do so.
2 - Only put food in that is already chilled, but not frozen. Bottles of soda at 6° will stay cool for longer than those at 12°. And if you leave your cooler out in the sun it won't keep your food as fresh. Still, there is no need to put it in the fridge.
3 - We recommend placing your cooler in the shade, which reduces direct heat as well as indirect reverberation of the sun.
4 - As with your refrigerator, we recommend opening it as little as possible.
5 - Clean your cooler before using it for any considerable length of time.
We suggest using white vinegar. It has natural disinfectant properties and eliminates odour.
