What sleeping bag should you choose?

Whether you've decided on a sleeping bag for camping or bivouacking, with or without an in-built mattress, there are numerous options available to ensure a good night's sleep in the great outdoors.

Pierre, Product Manager for "sleeping" accessories, offers his advice.

>Sleeping bags for bivouacking

"By definition, sleeping bags for bivouacking should be lightweight, compact and easy to carry in a ruck sack. They are fitted with a hood to ensure proper protection for the head against the cold. The sarcophagus shape is closer-fitting to the body, and offers increased heat as the volume of air to be heated is less than a traditional rectangular sleeping bag. When manufacturing sleeping bags for bivouacking, we use high-performance technical components, such as multi-fibre polyester lining or natural materials, such as duck feathers which retain heat well".

"There are all-in-one sleeping bags with built-in mattresses. This is what is known as the Sleepin'Bed context, in an ultra-lightweight version. And to save even more space, the mattress should be separated from the sleeping bag when stored in a ruck sack, before being attached again at bed time so as to benefit from all of the benefits offered by the "mattress+elasticated quilt structure".

"Finally, the comfortable temperature range for sleeping bags for bivouacking is between 15°C and -5°C."

>Sleeping bags for camping

"For camping, sleeping bags do not need to be carried around, at least not over long distances, and therefore do not need to be as lightweight, nor particularly compact. We therefore use fibre lining offering increased volume. The purpose of this is to offer increased comfort for campers. For this, we favour the rectangular shape, which provides greater ease and freedom of movement".

"Just as with bivouacking, we design 'all-in-one' "camping" sleeping bags. This is known as the Sleepin'Bed. It comprises an inflatable mattress sold with a quilt and pillow covers, or ergonomic pillows. Comfort is the watchword. Comfort is guaranteed thanks to the structure of the mattress, which with double sleeping bags allows one person to move in bed without disturbing the other".

"Sleeping bags for camping have a comfortable temperature range suited for summer, from 15°C."

"The last important tip is to select your sleeping bag depending on the use, location and season, so as to be sure to get the best suited sleeping bag and ensure absolute comfort, a better night's sleep and better recovery  to enjoy your outdoor activities to the full".
