Lengthy lab research into the design of the sole, combined with a special rubber formulation which optimises the balance between traction and adhesion. We aim to provide the best compromise when walking on dry and slippery terrain, addressing the differing requirements of each.
Footwear waterproofing test: tested in laboratory and actual usage conditions, the shoes are equipped with waterproof and breathable membrane to provide optimal protection from rain. First, the shoe is immersed in water while internal air pressure is applied to check that no bubbles form on the surface of the footwear. They are then placed on a mechanical arm that simulated walking, when half immersed in water: we then check that the inside of the shoe is perfectly dry.
During the waterproofing test, we test 3 levels of waterproofing: 2000 flexes (around 2 hours of walking), 4000 flexes (around 4 hours of walking) and 8000 flexes (around 8 hours of walking). Of course, after this test or in use, the shoe regains its original waterproofing once dry. The Forclaz 100 Waterproof boot passes level of 4000 flexes.
Making waterproofing last longer
A shoe's waterproofing is often undermined by water getting in from the top of the shoe. Using waterproof gaiters or mini gaiters is therefore recommended to keep your feet dry for longer by protecting the top part of your shoes and prevent water from getting in as well as pebbles, sand, etc. Use of a re-waterproofing spray is recommended several times per year. This will help your shoes recover their original water-repellent qualities and combat outer stains.
Try on both shoes, standing up, with the socks worn for hiking. Try on several models or sizes if necessary. Check two comfort points: the base of the heel and the front part of the foot going down. Avoid all pressure points when trying them on. Don't hesitate to walk around the store. Gradually start using you shoes during your first few hiking trips to break them in.
Which size should I select?
When taking up hiking, do not hesitate to take a size above your usual shoe size to guarantee an optimal comfort when walking downhill and to avoid your toes rubbing the tops of the shoe. Tip: Before any descent, make sure your nails are cut and check that your laces are tighten to prevent your foot from sliding forward in the shoe.
All our shoes are tested in comfort and in use, by users representative of those for whom the products are designed, under conditions identical to those that you can find in use. Our "Missions Tests" put the product manager in contact with people who are not affiliated with Quechua to test, develop and validate the products.
Other laboratory tests are also conducted to approve the quality of the following components: Tearing of the eyelets and straps, stitching, toxicology, UV resistance, abrasion of the sole and the components of the upper, accelerated ageing.
